Trees for the Future are working hard in and around Mount Elgon, Uganda where an entire mountainsides of forests have been cut down to grow bananas and coffee.
These crops have shallow roots that do not hold the soil in place. When heavy rains come, Mt Elgon has a constant problem with the mudslides. Sadly, these massive mudslides cause loss of land, homes, gardens, farms and lives creating a major threat to this community.
Planting deep rooted multipurpose trees, fruit trees, nitrogen fixing trees, intercropped with banana, coffee and other vegetables will help stabilize the soils and prevent mudslides as well as improve soil fertility, improve yields, and increase food security and income for farmers.
Trees for the Future has multiple projects in this region, with each project comprised of around 400 farmers who are on their way to planting a total of 1.2 Million trees per project (about 3,000 trees per farmer).
